Handling Difficult Situations

Guidance for navigating challenges in your group

5 steps ~10 min read
1

When Someone Dominates Discussion

Gently redirect: "Thanks for sharing, John. Let's hear from others too." You can also speak privately with the person to ask for their help drawing out quieter members.
2

When Conflict Arises

Address it calmly and privately if possible. Remind members of group norms. Focus on understanding, not winning. Sometimes agreeing to disagree is okay.
3

When Attendance Drops

Reach out personally to absent members. Ask if meeting time/location works. Consider if the group content is meeting members' needs.
4

When Someone Shares Something Serious

Listen with compassion. Thank them for trusting the group. If they're in danger or need professional help, gently suggest appropriate resources. You're not expected to be a counselor.
5

When You Need to Ask Someone to Leave

This is rare but sometimes necessary. Have a private, compassionate conversation. Be clear about the reasons. Offer to help them find a group that might be a better fit.

You're all set!

Follow these steps and you'll be on your way.
